Kalief Browder, a youth from The Bronx, New York, was held at Rikers Island jail complex from 2010-2013 without trial for allegedly stealing a backpack; two of those years were spent in solitary confinement. Two years after his release, Browder died of suicide due to the abuse (mental, physical and sexual) he endured while imprisoned.
